Our nonprofit has a Drupal 7 site that we have been meaning to migrate for literally years. Now D7 EOL is here and we have no budget for a developer. The site has about 80 pages, a few custom content types, and a donation form.
What are the realistic options for a small nonprofit with zero budget? Is there a DIY migration path?
The Drupal 7 to Drupal 10+ migration path exists but it is not DIY-friendly. The migrate module handles basic content types but custom fields and views need manual recreation.
Honest recommendation for a small nonprofit: skip Drupal entirely and move to WordPress. The content is simple enough that you can manually recreate 80 pages, and the ecosystem of free themes and plugins is much larger. Donation forms have good free options like GiveWP.
A few options at zero or near-zero budget:
- WordPress.com free tier for basic pages and blog. Limited customization but zero maintenance.
- Google Sites if you just need simple pages with no donation processing.
- Squarespace has a nonprofit discount program.
- WordPress.org on budget hosting ($3-5/month). Most flexible but requires some technical comfort.
For 80 pages, any of these work. The donation form integration is the main thing to verify before choosing. WordPress.org with GiveWP or the Stripe plugin is probably the most capable free option.
I was in a similar situation. Ended up going with WordPress on a $4/month hosting plan. Took me about two weekends to recreate the pages manually. The hardest part was finding a theme that looked professional without paying for a premium one.
It is doable as a non-developer, just expect it to take longer than you think.
Thank you all. WordPress.org with budget hosting sounds like the most realistic path. 80 pages manually is a lot but at least it is straightforward work. Going to start this month before the D7 site becomes a security risk.
