Wix

Wix

Wix is a hosted drag-and-drop website builder. Everything runs on Wix’s infrastructure: there is no self-hosted version, no direct database access, and no structured export of your full site. You build pages visually and Wix handles the hosting, SSL, and server management.

How it models content

  • Pages are the main building blocks, assembled in a visual editor by dragging elements onto a canvas
  • Blog posts exist as a separate section if the blog feature is enabled
  • Dynamic pages pull from Wix’s content collections (structured data), used for things like product listings or team directories
  • Apps add functionality — forms, bookings, e-commerce — from the Wix App Market
  • Design is stored as a proprietary layout, not as editable HTML or CSS

The core challenge is that Wix does not give you a structured export of your site. You can export blog posts as XML, but page content, design, forms, and app data have no equivalent export path.

Wix and WordPress compared

Wix Closest in WordPress
Pages (visual editor) Pages (block editor or page builder)
Blog posts Posts
Content collections Custom post types with custom fields
Apps Plugins
Design/layout Theme (no transfer possible)

Moving from Wix to WordPress is largely a rebuild, not a migration. Blog post text can be exported and imported. Everything else — page layouts, forms, e-commerce, dynamic content — gets recreated from scratch in WordPress. Budget for the rebuild time rather than expecting a clean transfer.

Current status

Actively developed and publicly traded. Wix serves a large share of small business and personal websites. It continues to add features, including AI-assisted site building.
