Jimdo
Jimdo is a hosted website builder from Hamburg, Germany, aimed at small businesses and personal sites. It runs two editors: the older Creator and the newer AI-assisted builder once called Dolphin. Neither lets you export your site’s content, which is the main thing to know before moving.
How it models content
- Pages are built from stacked elements (text, image, gallery, form, button) in a visual editor
- Navigation is a page tree with a limited number of levels
- Blog is a built-in feature in Creator, with posts and categories
- Store handles products and orders on plans that include it
- Design lives in templates and style settings, not editable theme files
What you can and cannot take with you
Jimdo has no content export and no export of products. The only export is for store orders, such as billing and shipping details. In practice:
- Page text has to be copied across by hand or scraped from the live site
- Images need downloading from the live site or your own originals
- Blog posts have to be recreated one by one
- Products have to be re-entered on the new platform
Jimdo and WordPress compared
| Jimdo | Closest in WordPress |
|---|---|
| Pages and elements | Pages and blocks |
| Blog | Posts |
| Store | An e-commerce plugin such as WooCommerce |
| Form element | A forms plugin |
| Templates and styles | Theme (no transfer possible) |
What moving involves
- Crawl the live Jimdo site and list every URL, so nothing gets lost.
- Save text and images from each page while the site is still live.
- Build the new site, then recreate pages, posts, and products.
- Set up 301 redirects from the old URLs. See 301 redirects in WordPress.
- Move the domain only once the new site is ready.
Treat it as a rebuild. A ten-page brochure site is an afternoon’s work; a store with hundreds of products is not. The Wix notes cover a similar hosted builder.
Current status
Actively operated. Jimdo continues to develop its newer AI-assisted builder alongside the original Creator editor.
