DataLife Engine
DataLife Engine (DLE) is a commercial PHP content management system built for news portals and high-traffic content sites. It was developed by SoftNews Media Group and is widely used across Russian-language and Eastern European websites.
How it models content
- Publications are the main content type. Each has a brief (summary) and a full text, with support for multi-page articles
- Categories are hierarchical and can each have their own template
- Custom fields extend publications with additional structured data — text, HTML, selects, checkboxes — grouped into tabs in the editor
- Users have role-based permissions and author profiles
- Comments are built in, with moderation tools
- Tags provide flat cross-category grouping
DLE is optimised for high-volume publishing: fast page generation, built-in full-text search across publications and custom fields, and caching designed for sites with thousands of articles.
What makes it different
| Feature | Notes |
|---|---|
| Licensing | Commercial, per-domain license. Not open source |
| Language | Interface localised into 18 languages, but documentation and community skew Russian |
| Hosting | Self-hosted, PHP + MySQL. No SaaS version |
| Export | No built-in site export. Content sits in a MySQL database and needs direct extraction |
| Extensions | Plugin and template ecosystem, concentrated on DLE-specific forums and marketplaces |
Moving content out of DLE means working directly with its database. The publication model (brief + full text + custom fields) is richer than a simple blog post structure, so any migration involves decisions about how to map those fields to the target platform.
Current status
Actively developed, with over 20 years of continuous releases. Recent versions have added REST API support and AI-powered comment moderation.
